10 Tenets

So, I thought it would be interesting to set down a few of the photographic principles I use so that people who arrive at the blog and don't want to read through a load of posts to establish what I think are the most important things about photography can get a clue - this is concentrated stuff in other words, it's a summary of where my head's at.

  1. Be a photographer not a curator, a librarian or an image-maker. I'm cool that other people want to be those things and I really wish them lots of joy, but it aint why I take pictures.
  2. Print. It's pretty cheap and it's great to see real pictures.
  3. Get the shot.
  4. Don't buy before you try. Or unless you really, really can't do without it.
  5. Photo-sharing social networking sites are for photo-sharing and social networking. They aren't to be used to judge your skill and/or value as a photographer.
  6. You're never as good as you think you are.
  7. You're never as bad either.
  8. You should always travel as light as you can.
  9. Learn the basics - they'll save your bacon in a tough shoot.
  10. Shoot lots - theoretical knowledge is the cornerstone, not the building.
